About Gedarel

Gedarel 30/150 is a combined oral contraceptive pill (COC). Like Marvelon and Mercilon, it contains two active ingredients: ethinylestradiol and desogestrel. These are synthetic versions of the naturally occurring female hormones oestrogen and progestogen.

How Does Gedarel Work?

As a combined oral contraceptive, Gedarel works in three ways:

  • Prevents ovulation, so the ovaries do not release an egg each month.
  • Thickens cervical mucus, making it harder for sperm to reach the womb.
  • Alters the lining of the womb, making it less likely for a fertilised egg to implant.

How Effective Is Gedarel?

When taken correctly, Gedarel is over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy. Missing a pill or taking certain medications, such as treatments for epilepsy or HIV, can reduce its effectiveness.

Can You Take Gedarel While Breastfeeding?

The combined pill is not usually recommended during the first 6 weeks after childbirth while breastfeeding. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist for personalised advice.

Does Gedarel Stop Periods?

You can delay your period by taking two strips of Gedarel back-to-back. Consult your doctor before doing this to ensure it is safe for you.

Does Gedarel Cause Weight Gain?

There is no strong evidence that Gedarel causes weight gain. Some women may notice minor fluctuations due to fluid retention during their cycle. Speak to your GP or pharmacist if you have concerns.

How Soon After Starting Am I Protected?

If you start Gedarel on the first day of your menstrual cycle, you are protected from pregnancy immediately. If started after the 5th day of your cycle, additional contraception is required for the first 7 days. Consult the patient information leaflet for full guidance.

I Forgot to Take My Pill – What Should I Do?

Always take your pill at the same time each day to maintain maximum contraceptive protection. Each pill may have slightly different rules for missed doses, so refer to the patient information leaflet that comes with your prescription for detailed guidance.

Alternative Contraceptives

Other combined pills similar to Gedarel include Mercilon and Marvelon.

The progestogen-only pill (mini pill) is another contraceptive option, suitable for women who cannot take oestrogen, such as women over 35 or women who smoke.

Additional birth control methods include the contraceptive coil (IUD) and implant. These options are highly effective and may be more suitable for women who find it difficult to remember to take a daily pill.

General Information About Gedarel

What type of pill is Gedarel?

Gedarel is a combined oral contraceptive (COC) as it contains both an oestrogen hormone and a progestogen hormone. It is also called a monophasic 21‑day pill because it is usually taken daily for 21 days, followed by a 7‑day break.

Is Gedarel the same as Marvelon?

Gedarel 30/150 contains the same active ingredients as Marvelon. Both are different brands of the same medication and work in the same way.

Is Gedarel good for acne?

Combined oral contraceptives, such as Gedarel, can sometimes improve acne. Other contraceptives, including progestogen‑only pills or implants, may worsen acne in some women.

Can I take Gedarel back to back?

If recommended by your doctor, Gedarel can be taken back to back without the 7‑day break. This method avoids the period‑like bleed during the break and still provides full protection against pregnancy.

Which pill is right for me?

Your doctor or prescriber will take a detailed medical history to determine the most suitable contraceptive pill for you. For most women, a combined pill works best. However, if you are over 35, smoke, suffer from migraines, or have other risk factors, your doctor may suggest a progestogen‑only pill instead.

Do I still need to use a condom when taking the pill?

While the pill protects against pregnancy, it does not prevent sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as chlamydia and gonorrhoea. Using a condom is recommended to reduce your risk of STIs.

Can I buy Gedarel 30/150 online?

Gedarel is a prescription‑only medicine in the UK. It is available to order from UK‑registered online pharmacies, such as Reach Online Pharmacy. You will need to complete an online medical questionnaire, which is reviewed by our GMC-registered doctors. If approved, a prescription is issued to our pharmacy team, and your medication is dispensed and delivered to your address. This service is only available to women who are already prescribed the contraceptive pill by their GP.

Before taking any medication, it is important to read the Patient Information Leaflet. You can find information leaflets for your medicines by typing them into the search bar at medicines.org, or by contacting us.

Other Conditions and Gedarel

The combined pill is not suitable for everyone. It may not be recommended for women over 35, women who smoke, or women who are significantly overweight.

Certain medical conditions can also make the combined pill unsuitable. This includes a history of blood clots, breast cancer, stroke, high blood pressure, or severe migraines.

If you are unsure whether you can take Gedarel, speak to your doctor or pharmacist. For further guidance, you can also consult the patient information leaflet provided with the medication.
