Gedarel 30/150 is a combined oral contraceptive pill (COC). Like Marvelon and Mercilon, it contains two active ingredients: ethinylestradiol and desogestrel. These are synthetic versions of the naturally occurring female hormones oestrogen and progestogen.

How Does Gedarel Work?

As a combined oral contraceptive, Gedarel works in three ways:

Prevents ovulation, so the ovaries do not release an egg each month.
Thickens cervical mucus, making it harder for sperm to reach the womb.
Alters the lining of the womb, making it less likely for a fertilised egg to implant.

How Effective Is Gedarel?

When taken correctly, Gedarel is over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy. Missing a pill or taking certain medications, such as treatments for epilepsy or HIV, can reduce its effectiveness.

Can You Take Gedarel While Breastfeeding?

The combined pill is not usually recommended during the first 6 weeks after childbirth while breastfeeding. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist for personalised advice.
