What is Cilique?
Cilique is a combined oral contraceptive pill used to prevent pregnancy. It contains two active ingredients: 250 micrograms of norgestimate and 25 micrograms of ethinylestradiol. These hormones mimic the natural hormones that regulate the female reproductive and menstrual cycle.
How Does Cilique Work?
Cilique helps prevent pregnancy in three ways:
-
Stops the ovaries from releasing an egg (ovulation)
-
Thickens the cervical fluid to block sperm from reaching an egg
-
Thins the lining of the womb to prevent a fertilised egg from implanting
When taken correctly, Cilique is over 99% effective. Its effect is reversible, meaning your fertility will return to normal once you stop taking it.
How to Take Cilique
-
Take one pill at the same time each day for 21 days following the days of the week marked on the strip
-
After 21 days, take a 7-day break from pills
-
During this break, you will usually have a withdrawal bleed (similar to a period)
-
Start your next pack after the 7-day break, even if you are still bleeding
You do not need extra contraception during the 7 pill-free days as long as you have taken your pills correctly and start your next pack on time.
If you experience vomiting or severe diarrhoea, absorption may be affected, so follow the missed pill guidance.
Missed Pills
Missing a pill can reduce your protection depending on how late you are:
-
Less than 12 hours late – Take your pill as soon as you remember and then take your next pill at the usual time. Your protection is not reduced.
-
More than 12 hours late or multiple pills missed – Take the most recent missed pill as soon as you remember and continue as normal, but use extra contraception (such as condoms) for the next 7 days.
If you often forget your pill, consider setting reminders on your phone or using a free pill reminder app.

Alternative Contraceptives
Do not switch contraceptive pills without consulting your doctor. If you feel the need to change your pill due to side effects or changes in your general health or circumstances, you could consider alternative methods such as:
-
A progestogen-only pill (mini-pill)
-
A contraceptive implant
-
An intrauterine device (IUD)
-
A contraceptive injection
-
A barrier method such as condoms
Thankfully, there are many contraceptive options available and, in most cases, at least one will suit you and your needs.
