About Brevinor

Brevinor is a combined oral contraceptive that contains two hormones: ethinylestradiol and norethisterone. Together, they work to prevent pregnancy in three main ways:

  • Preventing the ovaries from releasing an egg (ovulation)

  • Making the fluid (mucus) in the cervix thicker, making it more difficult for sperm to reach an egg

  • Stopping the lining of the womb from becoming thick enough for an egg to implant and grow

Benefits of Brevinor

  • One of the most reliable reversible methods of contraception when taken correctly

  • Does not interrupt sexual activity

  • Can help make periods more regular, lighter, and less painful

  • May reduce pre-menstrual symptoms

⚠️ Important: Brevinor and other hormonal contraceptives do not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as chlamydia, gonorrhoea, or HIV. To reduce the risk of STIs, barrier protection such as condoms should still be used.

Brevinor must always be taken exactly as directed to ensure effective protection against pregnancy.

Alternatives

Some patients may find that Brevinor is not the most suitable option for them, or they may experience unwanted side effects.

There are two main types of contraceptive pill:

  • Combined pills – contain both oestrogen and progestogen, and work in several ways to prevent pregnancy.

  • Progestogen-only pills (POP or mini-pill) – contain only progestogen and primarily work by thickening the mucus around the cervix, making it harder for sperm to reach an egg.

The main difference between the two is in how they act. While the combined pill prevents pregnancy in multiple ways, the mini-pill mainly relies on cervical mucus thickening. Some patients report fewer side effects with the mini-pill compared to combined contraceptives.

It’s important to speak to your GP or healthcare provider about the benefits and suitability of each type, so you can find the option that works best for you.

At Reach Online Pharmacy, we also offer a range of alternatives, including:

  • Gedarel 20/150 & Gedarel 30/150 (Combined Pill)

  • Cerazette (Mini-Pill)

  • Microgynon 30 (Combined Pill)

  • Cerelle (Mini-Pill)

How To Use Brevinor

  • When to Start
Begin taking Brevinor on the first day of your period. If you are not currently experiencing periods, speak with your GP or healthcare provider for advice on when to begin.

  • Starting Late
You can start Brevinor up to the fifth day of your period. However, if you do not start on day one, you may not be fully protected for the first seven days. During this time, use an additional form of contraception (such as condoms).

  • Daily Use
Take the tablet marked with the correct day of the week. You can take Brevinor at any time of day, but it must be taken at the same time each day for best effectiveness. Continue taking one pill every day until you have finished the blister strip.

  • Pill Pack Cycle
Each strip contains 21 tablets. After finishing all 21 tablets, stop for 7 days. You will usually experience a withdrawal bleed during this break.

  • Starting the Next Pack
After the 7-day break, begin your next blister strip on the same day of the week, whether or not you are still bleeding.

  • Ongoing Protection
You remain protected against pregnancy during the 7-day break, provided you start the next strip on time.

What are the advantages of the combined oral contraceptive?

Not suitable for women who cannot take oestrogen.

What are the advantages of the progestogen-only contraceptive (mini-pill)?

Can be taken by women who cannot use oestrogen.
Generally associated with fewer side effects.
Safe to use while breastfeeding.

What are the disadvantages of the progestogen-only contraceptive?

Must be taken at the same time every day.
If you are more than 3 hours late (or 12 hours for the desogestrel pill), it may not be effective.
Can cause irregular bleeding, periods may stop altogether, or become more frequent.

Which pill is right for me?

Your prescriber will take a full medical history before recommending the most suitable option.

For most women, the combined pill is highly effective.
For women who are over 35, smoke, have migraines, or certain risk factors, the progestogen-only pill may be more suitable.
Always speak to your GP or healthcare professional to determine the best option for you.

Am I protected against pregnancy straight away?

Some pills provide protection immediately if started on the first day of your period. Others may take up to seven days before becoming fully effective. Always check the patient information leaflet for your pill.

Do I still need to use a condom?

The pill protects against pregnancy but does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Condoms are recommended to reduce the risk of infections such as chlamydia, gonorrhoea, and HIV.

I forgot to take my pill – what should I do?

Take your pill at the same time each day to ensure maximum effectiveness. If you miss a pill, guidance depends on the type of pill you are taking and how late you are. Always refer to the patient information leaflet for specific instructions regarding missed doses.
